4 Frugal Halloween Costumes

4 Cheap DIY Halloween CostumesMy favourite time of year is Halloween. I love the candlelit pumpkins, the scary costumes, and the candy-seeking kids coming to my door. Finding a frugal way to do Halloween is pretty easy unless you love it and want to go all out.

Here are 4 of the hottest DIY frugal Halloween costumes this year:

May the Force Be With You – Adult and Child

With the new Star Wars movie coming out this year, Darth Vader and Storm Troopers are going to be popular picks this year. If you don’t want to spend $200 on a decent costume, you might want to do a little research and find a way to make your own.

If you want to go dark side of the force, you’ll want to dress as Darth Vader. You’ll need an all-black ensemble complete with some extras for costume special effects. It will probably come to a grand total of $40 from Walmart and the Dollar Store. Start making it early and you’ll be good to go for fighting those pesky empire rebels.

Minions Wanted, Apply Within – Child

Minions walked straight off the screen and into our hearts in 2010 when they first appeared as Gru’s worker bee force in Despicable Me. Since then, they’ve been spotted in DM’s sequel and recently enjoyed a starring role in the Minions movie this year.

If there was ever an Oscar for cuteness, these little suckers would win for sure. With that in mind, what mom wouldn’t want to support their child’s wish to become a Minion this Halloween? Harvard Homemaker shares this Easy, No-Sew, Low Cost Minion Costume comprised of Dollar Store supplies.

Just follow the directions and your little darling will be collecting candy from her adoring fans in no time. It’s one of the easiest frugal Halloween costumes out there.

Jack Sparrow Sails Again – Adult or Child

Whether you’re the pirate or pirate wench, these costumes are always super fun and cheap to put together. Check out Pinterest for the look you like and then hit Value Village for any second-hand options for your look and accessories and you’re pirate-tastic.

One of the best things about the pirate costume is you can get really unique with it. Five pirates can show up at the same party and still look really different.

Walking Dead Zombie Apocalypse – Adult

This costume is my favourite and easy to do with some second-hand store specials and flesh-decaying effects compliments of Google search: “How to make a zombie flesh wound”. My kid did it with stuff around the house and looked completely gross.

Ebay also offers great options for a reasonable price if you don’t want to go the DIY route. Just make sure you use a credit card when you buy online. While most internet retailers have some sort of return policy, your credit card can offer you protection.

There are plenty of other frugal Halloween costumes; all it takes is a little imagination and a trip to the second-hand shop for a spooky, fun holiday.
