Canada's 3 Most Stolen Cars

By: Nelson Smith on August 14, 2015

Nobody wants to have their car stolen.

There are ways you can minimize the risks of this, of course. You’d be surprised how many people I know who don’t normally lock their car. Parking inside of a garage or indoor area helps as well.

One other thing you can do to avoid your car getting stolen is to avoid certain models in the first place. Here are the brands you should avoid if you’re worried about your car getting stolen.

Ford trucks

According to the Insurance Bureau of Canada, which puts out an annual list of the most stolen cars in Canada, Ford trucks are consistently among Canada’s most stolen vehicles.

What’s interesting is the particular brand of Ford truck that’s the most stolen. The F-150 has been the most popular truck in Canada for decades. It seems like everyone I know in Alberta has one, or at least access to one. It makes moving in this province very easy.

But it’s the F-250 and the F-350 models that dominate the most stolen list. There’s an obvious reason for that, since they’re among the most expensive and common big trucks on the road. There’s always a demand for parts or to sell them to unsuspecting buyers.

Cadillac Escalade

The reasons for the Cadillac Escalade being one of Canada’s most stolen model are the same as for the Ford trucks. They’re expensive and common, meaning there’s always going to be a demand for them.

But there’s another reason why the Escalade is commonly stolen. Often thieves will immediately ship a used car overseas, where it ends up in places like Russia or Central America. Since the Escalade is a status symbol around the world, these criminals know they’ll have an easy sale no matter where the car ends up.

Honda Civic

There’s no surprise the Honda Civic makes an appearance on this list. It’s long been a popular option for thieves, for many of the same reasons why the other cars made the list.

What’s interesting about the Civic is many criminals are targeting older models. The 1999 and 2000 models both made the Top 10 list, while newer models were largely left alone.

How to avoid your car getting stolen

Don’t fear if you have one of these models. By taking a few easy steps, you can minimize the chance of having your car stolen. But keep your car insurance policy up to date...just in case.

Besides locking your doors, make sure you keep any valuable electronics away from view. Even an iPod can be enough of a bonus for a thief to pick your car over the next one on the lot.

Another easy thing you can do is make sure to park in a well-lit area. It might be nice to park on that deserted side street when you go to leave, but shadows give criminals all the time in the world to figure out how to get in.

And finally, invest in anti-theft device, especially if you have an older model without an alarm. Yeah, they’re a pain, but you’ll be thanking me when your car is exactly where you left it while the one next to it is gone.
