Vanessa's Wedding Diaries: The Honeymoon

Editor's Note: Weddings are an exciting event in someone's life and there is a lot of planning that goes into organizing the perfect day, as well as everything that comes afterwards. Please welcome Vanessa from Vanessa's Money back to our blog today as she continues to share her journey towards happily ever after.

I’ve always hoped that I’d have the perfect honeymoon. Growing up we never had the money for vacations on islands in the sun or weekends at the cottage and the idea of a whole week with my new husband seemed like it would be the greatest thing in the world.

The reality of our lives is that my future new husband and I can’t take a week off. He’s just opened a company and I make my money using the internet for eight hours a day. Things may have changed but I distinctly remember spending a total of one hour on the internet on all my trips to the Caribbean – the lost potential income is just too high.

While online one day I saw an advertisement for a screaming deal to Iceland during the months when my fiancé’s business is likely to be slow – but he wasn’t interested. In fact, he doesn’t seem interested in having a honeymoon at all... and I’m ok with that.

First of all, it’s not like 2015 Vanessa is 2000 Vanessa. I’ve been to almost 50 countries and live my life in such a way that I can jump on a plane and go to China for a week if I see a good deal – taking a vacation is not something I need to do right now.

Furthermore, living in Alberta means that Caribbean vacations are out – who has the money and time to go to Cuba from here? Mexico is a viable option that, quite frankly, doesn’t rank high on my list of places to visit. The idea of a longer stay in Las Vegas or a road trip back home was also discussed but with the Canadian dollar so low and gas prices still high, we would probably spend more than we would have had we gone to Iceland.

The final reason why I don’t mind not having a honeymoon is that we literally just got back to Canada. After 10 months in Korea and a vacation to Hong Kong and Japan this year, we aren’t in a big hurry to take another vacation. What’s more, when you’re fixed costs exceed $2 000/month, spending money to sleep in a hotel while your bed lays empty feels wasteful to me.

Between high costs and little free time, a honeymoon immediately following our wedding isn’t going to happen. Thankfully, we are young and can always postpone our honeymoon until we can have a long, relaxing and slow vacation!
