3 Ways to Host an Awesome Labour Day Party

By: Lindsey Boycott on September 2, 2015

Labour Day weekend is a great time to get together with friends. It’s the last hurrah for long days in the sun, splashing in the surf and sand between your toes. Or at least that’s what I imagine it looks like for people not occupying landlocked provinces with the closest body of salty water being a mountain range away. But I’m not going to let that stop me from finding the best way to celebrate summer one last time.

Here are 3 ways to party like it’s June 20 (2016’s first day of summer):

Host your own seafood bake

We might not be able to manage the classic beachside clambake, like this one from Real Simple. but that doesn’t mean we can’t do the next best thing. This can be especially fun if you have a backyard and have an outdoor fire pit from. Look up recipes four outdoor seafood bakes and you’ll be good to go for your get-together.

If you want to set a seaside mood and aren’t within walking distance of the beach, you’ll have to get a little more creative with your decor. Pinterest always has amazing ideas for party motif so do a little research and then hit up your local dollar store or Kijiji listings for cheap sea shells, sand, mason jars and other beach accessories. Your party will be a hit!

Celebrate history and throw a trade party

Do you know how Labour Day started? The industrialization of the 1800s may have been the birthplace of our modern economy, but it was also responsible for the terrible working conditions faced by thousands of factory workers. In protest, 10,000 workers marched from City Hall to Union Square on September 5, 1882. It is now celebrated as the first Labour Day and is remembered every year over the first weekend in September.

Throw a trade party to celebrate “the everyday working man” with a trades theme. Repurpose old tool boxes as centrepieces and find interesting ways to incorporate old tools into a party decor. Pick food that people pack for lunch like tasty sandwiches served in lunch boxes and beverages served from thermoses.

Plan a blue jeans BBQ bash

Denim has long been the traditional uniform for all things working-man. Use this as inspiration and head down to your local second hand store to buy up all the old jeans (they should be under $2 a pair). If you’re crafty, take some time to find new ways to craft them into decor options for your party

Make the honest and hardworking BBQ your central food theme with steak, hamburger and rib recipes for your partygoers (don’t forget a veggie option!). Get creative with skewers, BBQ sauces and side salads to round out your event.

The most important thing to remember is to enjoy your day off and spend it with family and friends. Now you’re well prepared for the Labour Day weekend festivities. Have fun!
