5 Easy Summer Backyard Makeovers

By: Lindsey Boycott on August 19, 2015

You love your yard. You want to create a welcome retreat from the world, an oasis where one can read a book or enjoy time with friends and family. The only problem is you’re short the big bucks needed to create the perfect landscape.

So what can you do to give your backyard a makeover without the hefty price tag?

Here are some quick and easy ideas to make your backyard beautiful and guess what? They don’t require you to spend a fortune.

DIY Flowers and Planters

I love flowers in the summer - they are so bright and beautiful. You can dress up almost any backyard space with colour. Look for different types of flowers on Google and then shop until your heart’s content to make your backyard beautiful and full with colour.

Did you know that you can make a plant holder out of almost anything? Homesthetics says it's easy to create planters from recycled items around the house like watering cans, wash bins and old tires. You’ll give these things a second life and give your backyard a makeover without spending big bucks.

Hang String Lights for Mood

Your porch can be transformed into an oasis almost instantly with white string lights. You can suspend them from a beam, wrap them around trees and shrubs or weave them throughout your garden. It creates a romantic ambience for any evening.

If you want to add some mood lighting for a perfect evening, fill old jars, wine bottles, or glass vases with more string lights and place them all over your yard. You can also suspend them from trees and beams for a lantern effect.

Give your Lawn Furniture a Summer Makeover

Do you have old plastic chairs that have been stacked in a corner for ages? Maybe it’s time to pull them out and give them a new coat of paint.

Paint comes in all kinds of colours and can cover almost any surface - as long as you buy the right kind. Use fun colours and pick up throw pillows to give your backyard a whole new look.

Create Depth with Windows

If you have a smaller yard, it can be hard to decorate without overcrowding your space. Hang some vintage windows mounted with mirrors along your fence to create depth through reflection. This can be beautiful when done right and doesn’t require a carpenter to complete the project. Search Kijiji for “vintage windows” and you’ll find more than enough options to start your project.

Keep in Touch with Your Home Insurance Company

While this isn’t an obvious ‘beautify your yard’ tip it’s important to update your home insurance company about changes to your property.

Giving your backyard a makeover can increase the value of your home and adding upgrades to your yard (such as adding a pond or fire pit) can change the parameters of your home insurance policy. It's always a good idea to keep your insurance company up to date on any changes.
