Travel Light to Save Money on Your next Trip

travel light to save money"Can you bring me back a souvenir?"

I get asked this prior to every trip. My response never changes. I tell the person that I’m going to try my best, but that I can’t promise anything.

Why can’t I promise anything?

I love to travel light. I don’t bring back much. I usually end up leaving things behind. The most I ever bring back is a shot glass as a friendly reminder of the fun times.

The best part about traveling light is that you don’t have to check your luggage and wait around for your stuff, and it can help you save money.

Research the climate in advance

If you’re going to a cold destination, you might struggle with packing light since you need to stay warm. The nice thing about going someplace warm is that it’s a little easier to pack light. I’m in Peru right now, so I’m fortunate to be escaping winter – and doing it with a minimum of fuss and with the ability to save money because I don’t need to pay for extra luggage. See what the climate is like and plan accordingly.

Buy the perfect bag

I’m sort of stuck here. I still haven't found the perfect travel bag. I’ve tested out a few bags and have managed to get away with packing very little. I’m still on the hunt for a bag that perfectly holds my laptop along with my clothes in one place. I may have to spend a little extra to make this happen, but in the long run, the perfect bag will help me save money.

Stop packing for every possible contingency

You might go on a hike on your trip. You might not. Do you really need to bring an extra bag with all of your hiking gear if you’re not 100% confirmed to be hiking? Do you really need to bring an outfit for a possible dinner party? Nope. These things cost extra money.

Stop worrying about random contingencies. Pack the basics that you would wear in your everyday life. You’re on a trip and nobody expects you to have your best suit ready to go.

Plan your main activities in advance

I contacted a few grappling gyms ahead of time in South America to see if I could train at these gyms. I know what my main activities will be for the trip.

I’m also brutally realistic when I plan my activities for a trip. I know that I’m not going to go on any hikes or visit typical tourist sites.

What are your main plans? Consider these when packing. You can save money and avoid unpleasant situations.

I’m a huge believer of traveling light. You don't want to be lugging around a huge suitcase with a pair of shoes for every occasion on your trip. Save money by travelling light on your next adventure.
