Desjardins Insurance was founded in Lévis, Quebec in 1944 and is the insurance unit of the Desjardins Group, considered the biggest association of credit unions in Canada. Before it became Desjardins, it was known as “Société d'assurance des caisses populaires" (SACP). Desjardins’ main offices are in Montreal but its legal team remains in Lévis.
While Desjardins’ presence is strongest in Quebec, it offers home insurance in other provinces. In addition to home insurance, Desjardins Insurance offers auto, life, business, and pet insurance.
As one of the province’s largest employers, Desjardins is considered the most influential company in Quebec’s banking sector, especially among millennials: according to Leger’s 2018 Youth Study, respondents scored the financial institution high on trustworthiness and social responsibility.
Given its cooperative structure, investing in the communities it operates in is part of Desjardins’ mandate. Cooperative banks are set up to integrate and be part of the community, sharing profits with members who come from the community versus shareholders. As a result, Desjardins has a strong community presence and can act quickly in the best interest of its members while maintaining profitability.
Desjardins has received favourable coverage from Quebec media for its philanthropy. In 2017, Desjardins donated approximately $200-million for the rights to sponsor Jeux du Quebec, a youth sporting event held every two years in the province.

Your home insurance policy will be customized to suit your needs and the property you’re insuring.
Home insurance premiums are determined by dwelling type (is it a single-detached home, a house with a basement tenant suite, or a condo?). Insurance companies also try to predict the kind and size of claim you might make in the future.
Here are some of the criteria insurance companies look at when calculating your premium.
You may qualify for several discounts when you purchase home insurance from Desjardins:
Alert - Alert is Desjardins’ water damage prevention program. Desjardins home insurance customers get a free water and freeze detector that alerts the homeowner to potential leaks so they can take action as quickly as possible, limiting the damage that may occur. To receive alerts, download the app to your phone and sync it with the detector that Desjardins provided you.
Identity Theft Assistance - Home insurance policyholders are eligible for support if their identity is stolen due to an error on Desjardins’ part. Desjardins Insurance will give advice on preventing identity theft, answer questions, and, in some circumstances, even provide legal aid. The company said that victims may also be reimbursed for up to $50,000 in reimbursement for any expenses related to the theft. The service was introduced after a 2019 security breach exposed the data of 2.7 million customers.
Radar - Structural damage caused by extreme weather can raise your home insurance premium. Desjardins Insurance policyholders can download Radar and get alerts about weather such as hail, thunderstorms, high winds or wildfires in their neighbourhood. Desjardins became one of the first property and casualty (P&C) insurers in Canada to offer an app that sends personalized weather alerts. If Radar detects a risk, the homeowner will get an alert sent to their phone. The app works with both iOS and Android and you can download it to a phone or tablet.
The difference between Radar and other weather alert apps is that while most weather apps provide a regional forecast even for high-risk weather, Radar gives you severe weather warnings for specific addresses. It also allows you to set monitoring for different locations simultaneously so you can receive alerts for your home, office, and even your cottage.
Yes, there is. The Desjardins Home-Auto mobile app lets you access your insurance policy and file a claim — all on your smartphone. Plus, all those alert apps such as Radar and Alert are accessed via the Home-Auto app.
There’s another added benefit of the app: the Ajusto telematics program, which can help you keep tabs on your driving habits. The app is able to gauge speed, braking, and more. You may qualify for up to a 25% discount on your car insurance premium if the app determines you’re a good driver. Some insurance companies require you to install new hardware in your car in order to participate in a telematics program. With Desjardins, all you have to do is install the app and hit the road.
If you need to submit a claim on your home insurance, or need to ask a question about submitting on, Desjardins Insurance has several options:
Desjardins has a solid presence in the home insurance space but it also offers other forms of insurance. This is good news if you’re looking to save money since you can bundle multiple insurance policies. Here are the other types of insurance offered by Desjardins:
