About The Personal Canada home insurance.

The Personal was founded in 1974 and has headquarters in both Mississauga, Ont. and Levis, Que. It uses the name La Personnelle in Quebec, while it does business as The Personal in the rest of Canada. The Personal is a subsidiary of Desjardins, North America’s largest federation of credit unions.

The Personal primarily provides property and casualty group insurance (not to be confused with workplace group insurance, which offers health and life insurance) to members and employees of more than 700 organizations, such as professional associations, companies, alumni associations, retirement groups, and unions. You or your spouse must be a member of one of those organizations in order to receive the exclusive group rates offered by The Personal.

Anyone can apply, but they won’t qualify for the group rate unless they’re a member or employee of one of those organizations.

Getting insurance for your home is easier than you think. To get the lowest rate possible, the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada recommends following these steps when shopping for home insurance.

Compare home insurance quotes from various providers.

Ask your broker or agent about bundling your home and car insurance policies.

Ask your broker or agent about which discounts you qualify for.

You might be able to further reduce your by increasing your deductible (the amount you pay toward a claim before your insurance kicks in) and by offering to pay your insurance bill annually instead of monthly.

Increasing your deductible is a great way to save on home insurance in the short term, just make sure you have money reserved for this purpose. Focusing on finding cheap quotes isn’t always a good idea. Having the right amount of coverage — now that should always be the goal.

Factors that determine your home insurance quote

Your home insurance policy will be customized to suit your needs and the property you’re insuring.

Home insurance premiums are determined by dwelling type (is it a single-detached home, a house with a basement tenant suite, or a condo?). Insurance companies also try to predict the kind and size of claim you might make in the future.

  • Multi-line: Bundling your home and auto insurance together could save you up to 20% on your home insurance at The Personal and up to 5% on your car insurance.
  • Claims-free discount: Haven’t filed a claim with The Personal for several years? You may qualify for a discount of up to 20%.
  • Alarm system: Having a burglar alarm, fire alarm, or sprinkler system in your home could save you up to 15% at The Personal.
  • Leak detectors connected to a central monitoring system: Having these in your home could save you up to 5%. They can be purchased from a licensed plumber.
  • Shut-off valve with water leak detectors: Having these installed will save you as much as 10% at The Personal. These devices can be purchased from a licensed plumber.
  • Pneumatic back-flow system: Having this in your home will save you 10% on the water damage (groundwater and sewer back-up) portion of your policy at The Personal if you purchase this enhanced optional coverage.
  • Clean energy discount: If your residence is LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified, you can save up to 10%.

Special programs

Identity theft assistance - This service is included with The Personal home insurance policy. You can get free assistance from a lawyer to help recover your identity, or receive advice on how to prevent identity theft if it was stolen or you think it’s been stolen. However, it doesn’t cover any financial losses. Also, you will get access to a psychologist for a free one-hour telephone consultation to help with any stress that occurs as a result of your identity being stolen.

Alert program - The Personal gives policyholders free water and freeze detectors, meant to limit potential damage caused by a water leak. An alert gets sent to The Personal mobile app (available for iOS or Android devices) if the detector senses water or potential risk of freezing. You must have wifi in your home and a compatible smartphone or tablet. Additional detectors are available for $36 apiece.

Help with finding a recommended service provider - If you need work to get started quickly, The Personal has an online directory of emergency cleanup and home renovation experts in your area. The service providers offer a five-year warranty on work performed and will give you a detailed work plan so you can easily track their progress.

The Personal homeowners insurance endorsements

Home insurance endorsements help provide extra coverage for concerns that make the cost of replacing or repairing your home more than the coverage in your existing policy.

The standard water coverage The Personal’s home insurance policy offers doesn't include coverage for water damage caused by sewer back-up, water seepage or floods. For an additional fee, you can get the extra coverage at The Personal.

How to submit home insurance claims with The Personal

The following section details how to contact The Personal if you hold a home insurance policy with the company.

The Personal requires you to call its claim service if you’re filing a home insurance claim. It encourages you to call if you’re unsure whether to file a claim or want to get more information regarding The Personal's home insurance coverage and your policy.

The claims advisor will need various documents, including receipts, proof of ownership, and a list of damaged or stolen property. Keep any appliances that cause a fire or water damage so it can be examined as part of your insurance claim.

You can also use the virtual assistant to get in touch with The Personal home insurance customer service. Visit The Personal’s website and click on the virtual assistant avatar in the bottom right corner.

You can check the progress of your filed claim and upload any supporting documentation online using the app.
